GenCon 2001 Game Convention

Oct 06, 2014

It started waaaaaaay long ago in 1967 and it's been happening once a year ever since. Gamers from all over the world have gathered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for GenCon - North America's largest game convention. It's packed with celebrities, costume competitions, weird (but fun!) people and more games than you can shake a mouse at. It's all happening from August 2nd to August 5th, and it's gonna be big - 25,000 people big.

Wizards of the Coast are the head honcho's behind the whole affair. Their Dungeons & Dragons game started the convention and it's one of the main events every year at the Wizards of the Coast castle. The castle is the first place (other than Kidzworld) to check out the Harry Potter Trading Card Game, hear the latest on the Pokemon Trading Card Game and even the Star Wars Role-Playing Game.

Don't forget about this year's celebrity guests:

  • James Marsters - Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Billy Dee Williams - Lando Calrissian from the original Star Wars.
  • Marina Sirtis - Deanna Troi from Star Trek: the Next Generation.
  • And more!

If you get a chance to wander around the rest of the event you'll find 200 or so different booths loaded with games. Sega has it's latest games ready for display and other booths are stocked with miniature wargame figures or art from famous comic book artists.

Tons of video games are on display from the hottest companies. Activision - the guys behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Spider-Man and more - get their own booth to show off their new games. You even get to check out stuff that isn't finished yet. Droooool!

If you're not gonna be able to make it don't sweat it. You can save the hassle of packing all your clothes, lugging them around, meeting strange sweaty people and sleeping in an unusual bed. Instead you can click on over to www.gencongamefair.com and check out Virtual GenCon for pictures of what's going on at the convention.
