National Recess Week

Feb 27, 2009

National Recess Week (March 2-6, 2009) is how Cartoon Network is celebrating the best part of the school day – recess!

Not only is recess totally fun, it’s also a good time to get out and get moving! When you play outside, you’re not only having a great time with your friends – you’re also staying fit, active and healthy.

What games do you and your friends like to play at recess? Here are some Kidzworld faves:

Four Square

Draw a large square on the pavement with chalk, then divide it into four smaller, equal squares. One player stands in each of the four squares. Each player gets a title – the most important square’s player is the king, followed by the queen, prince and princess (or you can call yourselves the president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary). To start the game, the king serves the ball by bouncing it once in his/her square then hitting it toward one of the other players in the other squares. That player has to catch the ball before it bounces in his/her square. If he/she doesn’t catch it, he/she is out and everyone moves up a rank.

Horse

This is a basketball game where two or more players take turns shooting the basketball from certain spots around the net. The first marked spot from which you shoot the ball is the “H” spot. The second is the “O,” the third is the “R,” the fourth is the “S,” and the last is the “E” spot. The first player stands in the H spot and shoots the ball at the basket. If he/she makes the shot, he/she gets an “H.” Then the next player takes a turn. Once all the players have shot from the first spot, they move on to the “O” spot. If a player misses a shot, he/she has to stay in that spot until he/she gets a basket. The first player to spell “HORSE” wins.

Jump Rope

Jumping rope is an amazing workout. It’s easy – all you need is yourself and skipping rope! Or, play with your friends with a longer rope. Two people turn the rope from either end while one jumper skips rope in the middle. Harder yet – double dutch! This is when two rope turners turn two separate skipping ropes at once and the jumper has to jump both at the same time in between the two turners!
