When Fone and Smiley Bone try to deliver a rat creature cub back to its mountain home, the cousins find themselves fighting for their lives against the hungry mountain-dwelling creatures. Check the fifth book in the bestselling Bone series!

Hungry Rat Creatures

Fone and Smiley Bone travel to the mountains where they try to return a cute rat creature cub to its home. But their heroic quest proves difficult as they come face to face with some terrifying creatures. First they encounter two grown up rat creatures, who are itching to sink their sharp teeth into the Bone cousins. Fone, Smiley and their rat creature companion just barely escape with their lives. But they soon find themselves in even greater danger.

The War of the Valley

The cousins walk straight into the face of danger—a great mountain lion named Roque Ja, Master of the Eastern Border. Rock Jaw (as the cousins mistakenly call him) tells them about the war that has divided the valley: the dragons vs. the rat creatures. The leader of the rat creatures—“the hooded one”—hopes to conquer the valley while it’s weak. But someone stands in his way. A new leader who bears the star is trying to unite the valley, ruining the hooded one’s chance of gaining power. Who is this mysterious new leader? None other than Phoney Bone—Fone and Smiley’s cousin!

The Orphans’ Escape

While the Bone cousins try to escape, Rock Jaw has other plans. Fortunately, the possums come to the rescue. They find a group of orphaned creatures hiding inside the mountain from Rock Jaw and the evil rat creatures that ate their parents. Together the Bone’s, the possums and the orphans scale the steep mountain, but find their lives once again in grave danger.

The Bottom Line

There’s a reason Jeff Smith’s Bone series has sold over one million copies. It’s because they’re an absolute thrill ride! The books are action-packed and filled with stunning pictures. If you haven’t tried reading the Bone series, now’s the time. But definitely start with number one—Out From Boneville—because the series has an ongoing story.

Rock Jaw Rating: 5
