Spore Hero :: Wii Game Review

Spore Hero is a Wii-exclusive spin-off of last year’s innovative PC game Spore, taking that game’s complexities and refining them with the Wii in mind. The result is a fun and accessible creature adventure that rewards creativity.

Adaptation

Taking a real-time strategy game and making it work on a console has always been a tricky matter. Maxis and EA took the smart way out by designing the game from the ground up on the Wii and ditching the real-time strategy in favour of an action-adventure. In building the game for Wii the developer were able to use motion controls that are responsive and practical. Spore Hero blends what is useful about the Wii-mote with a traditional controller layout that makes great use of the motion controls, but doesn’t depend on them alone for gameplay.

Missing Link

Spore Hero allows the player to create their own character out of a blob with two legs and eyes into a fearsome winged and horned beast with the power to glide or charge their opponents. As you change the parts on your creature and continue to upgrade them, new abilities will become available to you, such as swimming or spitting projectiles. Though the graphics are nothing revolutionary, the colourful environments and art direction playfully immerse the gamer in the Spore universe.

Evolution

When you finish the story mode, you can always create monsters with a friend to duel against each other, extending your playtime significantly. The character creator in and of itself is fun to play around with, put a full-fledged adventure game on top of that an a mode that allows you to battle a friend and what you’ve got here is a solid game for a fan of adventure games of any age.
