The Greatest Grudge Match: Manchester United Vs. Liverpool

Mar 24, 2010

Do you know any great rivalries as big as the one between Liverpool and Manchester United? This feud is more than just a soccer match, it’s more than just a sport, it’s WAR! The players and fans take each game very personal and it’s probably the closest event to a real war in the world of sports. Last Sunday, Manchester United defeated Liverpool 2-1 and the game was nothing short of the anticipated grudge match. This may leave you asking the question… why do they hate each other so much?

A Hundred Hostilities

Liverpool and Manchester are both situated in the North West of England and the bitterness between the two cities originated more than a hundred years ago when the cities were competing for jobs, money and growth. The two cities used to work harmoniously together as goods were shipped into the Liverpool’s port and sent to Manchester for industry production. However, in 1887, Manchester built their own canal to the sea and this sank Liverpool’s economy. Thus began the bitter relationship between Liverpool and Manchester and continues strongly today in their soccer matches.

War to the Wire

These two great soccer teams from England meet twice every year in the Premier League, the most popular soccer league in the world. They are both considered to be two of the most powerful teams in England with similar results and success.

Ever since 1885, the teams have played head-to-head 179 times with Manchester United slightly out-winning Liverpool by only 9 matches. Competing for all the different types of championships in Europe, such as the FA Cup and the Champions League Cup, Liverpool has just one more title than Manchester, 58-57 cups.

Controlling the Chaos

The rivalry is as strong as ever, but the good news it that it is under control. Even though there is a lot of hate between the players and the fans, the violence and problems are decreasing due to the participation of police and media to control the two sides from getting too close two each other. As the fans fight less and less in the streets, maybe one day they’ll be able to enjoy the game and laugh about their silly grudges.
