In honor of Black History Month, Nickelodeon is celebrating prominent African Americans throughout February 2010, on Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nick at Nite, TeenNick, Nicktoons, Nick.com and NickJr.com. Watch teens perform their own poetry about inspirational African Americans!

  • Bessie Coleman: First African American to earn an international pilot’s license
  • Toni Morrison: First African American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in literature
  • Granville T. Woods: Inventor
  • Ruby Bridges: First African American child to attend an all-white school in the South
  • CJ Walker: Businesswoman
  • Ella Fitzgerald: Jazz vocalist
  • Jack Johnson: Heavyweight boxer
  • Josephine Baker: Performer
  • Joseph Lee: Inventor of the kneading machine
  • Langston Hughes: Poet
  • Sidney Poitier: Oscar-winning actor
  • Thurgood Marshall: First African American to serve on the US Supreme Court
