Nanny McPhee Returns Movie Review

Aug 18, 2010

It has been five years since Nanny McPhee first made her debut on the big screen. And now, the world’s most frightening and magical nanny is back in Nanny McPhee Returns.

A Struggling Family

Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a mother of three, struggling to maintain her farm while her husband is fighting in the war. But times are tough, and she’s barely making ends meet. It doesn’t help that her greedy brother-in-law is relentlessly trying to convince her to sell their family farm. But selling the farm isn’t for his own financial gain. He gambled it away and now two women are after him. If he doesn’t give them the farm, they’ll take his kidneys.

Chaos on the Farm

When their posh cousins arrive from London to visit with Isabel and her three children, the chaos begins. They fight, scream, and break things. And there’s nothing Isabel can do about it. That is, until Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) arrives on their doorstep. With her magical walking stick, she brings some order into the household.

Nanny McPhee’s Motto

Nanny McPhee works under the philosophy that when the children need her but do not want her, she will stay. But when they want her but do not need her, she will go. Her tactics involve five lessons, which the kids must learn over the course of Nanny McPhee’s stay.

The Bottom Line

Nanny McPhee Returns is a wonderful family film, filled with new characters and new jokes. Harry Potter fans will find three familiar faces in this laugh-out-loud film. Nanny McPhee star Emma Thompson plays Professor Trelawney; Mrs. Doherty, the crazy old woman, is Maggie Smith who plays Professor McGonagall; and Lord Gray, the kids’ uncle, is Ralph Fiennes who plays Lord Voldemort.
