Having your parents perish in a house fire is enough grief to last anyone a lifetime. For the Baudelaire children, this Bad Beginning is just the first of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

A Series of Unfortunate Events - The Bad Beginning

Lemony Snicket's The Bad Beginning introduces the Baudelaire children, three wealthy kids who have their lives changed forever when their parents are killed in a house fire. From there, things don't get much better for Violet, an inventive 14 year-old, her younger book-obsessed brother, Klaus and their younger sister, Sunny, who likes to chew things. The three young orphans are sent to live with a distant relative, Count Olaf, a despicably dirty person who makes the children cook and clean for him, while he pounds booze with his completely untalented theater troup.

A Series of Unfortunate Events - Disasterous Days

While the Baudelaires are busy doing chores for the Count, the Count is busy planning evil ways to get his hands on the Baudelaire's vast fortune. So how does everything turn out? Well, let's just say there are no smiles, group hugs or party balloons in this story. It's all bad, which is what makes The Bad Beginning and the rest of the tales in A Series of Unfortunate Events such a great read. Just when you think things might turn out okay for the Baudelaires, their lives collide with disaster - usually at the hands of Count Olaf.

A Series of Unfortunate Events - The Grim Grotto

Lemony Snicket has written ten books in the series so far, and an eleventh tale, The Grim Grotto, will be arriving in book stores on September 21, 2004. But that's not all - on December 17, 2004, A Series of Unfortunate Events hits theaters with Jim Carrey starring as the wicked Count Olaf, Meryl Streep as the articulate Aunt Josephine, and Jude Law as Lemony Snicket, the narrator who also becomes a character. The movie will be based on the first three books in the series, including The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide Window.
