The Vampire Diaries: Season 2, Episode 18 :: The Last Dance

This week on The Vampire Diaries (Season 2, Episode 18), Klaus possesses Alaric’s body and Bonnie sacrifices herself to save Elena. Check out our recap of “The Last Dance”, which aired April 14, 2011.

The Possession

This week’s episode had a slow buildup that ended with a big bang. The show begins with Klaus still possessing Alaric’s body. He holds Katherine hostage and discovers all of the Salvatore brothers’ secrets. In order to protect Elena, Stefan and Damon sign their house over to her so no vampires can enter unless she asks them to. But, they can’t keep her under their control at all times. So they decide that Bonnie must stay by her side– especially since Bonnie is willing to die to protect her.

Klaus compels a student at Elena’s school and sends Elena the message that he will be waiting for her at the school dance. The gang invites Alaric over to try to formulate a plan to stop Klaus, not realizing that Klaus has taken over her body. Unfortunately, they reveal that Bonnie has the power to kill an original. Klaus gets his witch friend to cast a spell to protect him, thinking that if he can trap Bonnie into using her powers she will die.

The Dance Off

At the dance, Klaus continues to taunt Elena, dedicating a song to her. Stefan and Damon are on high alert, but don’t know who to look out for since they have no idea what Klaus looks like. Klaus stages a distraction and has Jeremy attacked while he (disguised as Alaric) whisks Elena and Bonnie off into the dark without even trying. He tells the girls that Elena is safe, she isn’t on his hit list for the night – Bonnie is. Damon shows up and Elena escapes while Bonnie and Damon come up with a plan to trick Klaus.

Bonnie goes head to head against Klaus, exerting her power until it looks likes she is dead. But, it is all a ruse to trick Klaus into thinking no one can hurt him. Unfortunately, Elena and Stefan weren’t let in on the plan and believe Bonnie really died. After enduring Elena’s wrath, Damon lets her in on the secret and reveals his true feelings once and for all, saying that if it really does come down to it he would let Bonnie die to save Elena because he cares about her that much. Could there be a new romance on the horizon? Still upset, Elena pulls the dagger out of Elijah, bringing him back to life so he can kill Klaus and Bonnie can stay safe.

Will Elijah turn against Elena or join their team to defeat Klaus? Next week on the Vampire Diaries we find out the real story between Katherine and Klaus. Stay tuned for more Vampire Diaries.

Many of the reviews and critics say it's bad because they are only looking at it from 'comic to movie' perspective. It was still a really cool movie and you should go see it. I'd have to agree with this. The movie itself was great. I think some people looked at it poorly because they were expecting something more similar to the older films or comparing it too hard to the comics. I personally think that it was a great way to reinvent some of the characters.

"It's so hard to talk when you want to k-ll yourself. That's above and beyond everything else, and it's not a mental complaint-it's a physical thing, like it's physically hard to open your mouth and make the words come out. They don't come out smooth and in conjunction with your brain the way normal people's words do; they come out in chunks as if from a crushed-ice dispenser; you stumble on them as they gather behind your lower lip. So you just keep quiet.” Ned Vizzini, "It's Kind of a Funny Story"

“Isn't there something in living dangerously?' There's a great deal in it,' the Controller replied. 'Men and women must have their adrenals stimulated from time to time.' What?' questioned the Savage, uncomprehending. It's one of the conditions of perfect health. That's why we've made the V.P.S. treatments compulsory.' V.P.S.?' Violent Passion Surrogate. Regularly once a month. We flood the whole system with adrenin. It's the complete physiological equivalent of fear and rage. All the tonic effects of murdering Desdemona and being murdered by Othello, without any of the inconvenience.' But I like the inconveniences.' We don't,' said the Controller. 'We prefer to do things comfortably.' But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.' In fact,' said Mustapha Mond, 'you're claiming the right to be unhappy. Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have ######## and cancer, the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.' There was a long silence. I claim them all,' said the Savage at last. Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. 'You're welcome,' he said.”
