American Idol: Season 11, Week 9 :: 12 Finalists Compete

Mar 16, 2012

This week on American Idol (Season 11, Week 9), the Top 12 perform songs from the year they were born. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “12 Finalists Compete,” which aired on March 14, 2012, to discover what you missed.

The Gentle Giant Says Goodbye

There was some unusual drama on American Idol this week. It turns out that Jermaine Jones (commonly called the gentle giant) has four unpaid criminal charges that he didn’t disclose before joining the show. Ultimately, the producers had no choice but to remove him from the competition. So the soulful voice says goodbye.

The Best of the Night

The remaining 11 contestants performed songs from the years they were born, and the selection wasn’t great for some. Two contestants in particular stood out from the pack: Joshua Ledet and Hollie Cavanagh. Joshua sang “When a Man Loves a Woman”, which received a standing ovation from the judges. His performance was flawless, as if the song was made for him. Hollie also showed what she can do with “Power of Love.”

Singing After Surgery

The rest of the performances were just mediocre. No one butchered their songs, so elimination will be a tough call this week. The judges were amazed by Phillip Phillips, who performed well in spite of having undergone kidney surgery earlier in the week. Whether he was still in pain or not, he shined.

The Comebacks

After nearly going home last week, Elise Testone proved why she deserves to be in the competition with her version of “Let’s Stay Together.” Her raspy voice can be a hit or miss when it comes to certain songs, but this one definitely worked for her. Shannon Magrane’s "One Sweet Day" was improvement on last week’s "I Have Nothing." But still not good enough to fast track her to the top of the pack.

Elimination

This was an important elimination because after tonight, the remaining 10 contestants will go on the post-season American Idol tour. America voted and put the three blond girls in the bottom three: Elise Testone, Shannon Magrane and Erika Van Pelt. Ultimately, Shannon was eliminated, and judges opted not to use their one save of the season (good choice, judges!).
