American Idol: Season 11, Week 16: 5 Finalists Compete

May 03, 2012

This week on American Idol (Season 11, Week 16), the Top 5 contestants performed two songs each, one from the 60s and one from a British artist. Read Kidzworlds recap of “5 Finalists Compete,” which aired on May 2, 2012, to discover what you missed.

There are only 5 contestants left and the competition is getting fierce. The judges held back on their standing ovations last night, perhaps because of Skylar Laine’s comment last week about Joshua’s high standing O record.

Hollie Cavanagh

Hollie opened the show with a performance that added some much-needed oomph to her on-stage persona. And she concluded with a rendition of "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis. The judges loved both of her performances for a change. The strangest part, however, was when Steven Tyler claimed that he’d never heard "Bleeding Love" before. How can a music icon not hear such a mainstream song?

Skylar Laine

Skylar Laine definitely rocked it this week with her two performances. Jennifer Lopez even asked her, “You want to win, don’t you?” while seeming less enthusiastic about Skylar’s peak in the competition. J-Lo definitely reserves her overwhelming praise for Joshua and her flirty smiles for Phillip.

Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillip’s performances were both a little lackluster this week. It seems that he peaked too soon in the competition and now the other contestants are surpassing him. In his second song of the night, he had to strain to hit the high notes in the chorus, which the judges failed to comment on. This may be the week of Phillip’s departure.

Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez brought a bundle of hair-flipping energy to her first performance, singing “Proud Mary.” Her second performance was the exact opposite. It was a mellow, absolutely angelic version of “You Are So Beautiful,” which should have earned her a standing ovation.

Joshua Ledet

Joshua’s two songs were both on the money as always. His first was energetic, but not exactly a stand out performance. His second, however, had so much passion and pain behind it, you’d think he'd just had his heart broken. (Probably by Hollie. We’ve seen the way he looks at her!) The final performance earned him - you guessed it! - a standing ovation. J-Lo even went so far to say that he’s one of the best singers she’s heard in 50 years! (The fact that she’s only 43 didn’t seem to cross anyone's minds).

Elimination

No doubt it was a shocking elimination this week for country fans across America. With only the top 5 remaining, Ryan Seacrest announced the bottom two instead of the bottom three. It included Hollie Cavanagh and Skylar Laine. Hollie must have all of Britain on her side, as she managed to hang on by the skin of her teeth once again. As a result, we said goodbye to country's next big star, Skylar Laine.
