The Vampire Diaries: Season 3, Episode 21 :: Before Sunset

May 04, 2012

This week on The Vampire Diaries (Season 3, Episode 21), Klaus, Damon and Stefan team up! Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Before Sunset”, which aired May 3, 2012, to discover what you missed.

Hostage

Stronger and more evil than ever, Alaric shows up at the high school and takes Caroline hostage. He calls Elena and tells her to come rescue her friend. Alaric wants to use Elena as bait for Klaus. Alaric thinks if he can get Klaus to the school, he can kill him with the white oak stake.

This turn of events has the surprising effect of bringing the Salvatore brothers and Klaus together. They all share the common goal of wanting to stop Alaric. They enlist Bonnie and Jeremy’s help to come up with a plan.

Spells

Bonnie says she wants to do a dangerous spell to channel extra power to Klaus, Damon and Stefan. But, in order to do this, she needs to stop a human heart. This means Jeremy. He says he knows the risk, but he needs to do this to save his sister. Thus the spell continues and the guys storm the school. But, Alaric is too powerful for them all. Just as he is about to kill Klaus, Elena begs him to stop. She says if he doesn’t save Klaus and the Salvatore brothers, she will kill herself. Turns out, Esther tied Alaric’s life to Elena’s, so he will only be alive as long as she is. Elena slits her own throat and blacks out.

Second Chances

When Elena wakes up, she finds she is tied up at Klaus’s house with her blood being drained. After finding out he can kill Alaric by killing Elena, Klaus wants to destroy her. Thankfully, Damon and Stefan show up just in time to save the day, again, and finally kill Klaus using the power from Bonnie’s spell. But, Alaric still can’t be stopped. He holds an emergency council meeting to find a way to destroy all vampires. Meanwhile, Elena isn’t doing as well as she thought. Just as the episode ends she collapses on the floor. Did Klaus have a negative effect on her when he was draining her blood?

Many of the reviews and critics say it's bad because they are only looking at it from 'comic to movie' perspective. It was still a really cool movie and you should go see it. I'd have to agree with this. The movie itself was great. I think some people looked at it poorly because they were expecting something more similar to the older films or comparing it too hard to the comics. I personally think that it was a great way to reinvent some of the characters.

"It's so hard to talk when you want to k-ll yourself. That's above and beyond everything else, and it's not a mental complaint-it's a physical thing, like it's physically hard to open your mouth and make the words come out. They don't come out smooth and in conjunction with your brain the way normal people's words do; they come out in chunks as if from a crushed-ice dispenser; you stumble on them as they gather behind your lower lip. So you just keep quiet.” Ned Vizzini, "It's Kind of a Funny Story"

“Isn't there something in living dangerously?' There's a great deal in it,' the Controller replied. 'Men and women must have their adrenals stimulated from time to time.' What?' questioned the Savage, uncomprehending. It's one of the conditions of perfect health. That's why we've made the V.P.S. treatments compulsory.' V.P.S.?' Violent Passion Surrogate. Regularly once a month. We flood the whole system with adrenin. It's the complete physiological equivalent of fear and rage. All the tonic effects of murdering Desdemona and being murdered by Othello, without any of the inconvenience.' But I like the inconveniences.' We don't,' said the Controller. 'We prefer to do things comfortably.' But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.' In fact,' said Mustapha Mond, 'you're claiming the right to be unhappy. Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have ######## and cancer, the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.' There was a long silence. I claim them all,' said the Savage at last. Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. 'You're welcome,' he said.”
