Nickelodeon's first full-length, stop-motion animation special, SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas! has come to DVD! This seasonal SpongeBob movie is set to become a new holiday classic. Check out the Kidzworld DVD Review!

SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas!

It's Christmas Eve in Bikini Bottom, and in true SpongeBob fashion there's no shortage of innocent excitement. While SpongeBob is busy spreading cheer, the nefarious Plankton is busy scheming a way to get something other than coal from Santa this year (in fact he has some very specific plans in mind.) Plankton devises the perfect way to get presents, he won't be good, he'll just make everyone else bad by adding the element Jerktonium (guaranteed to make you a jerk) to free slices of Christmas cake. Everyone in Bikini Bottom is wild about the free cake, until they get grumpy that is!

This is Nickelodeon's first-ever attempt at a stop-motion animation film, and its meant to give it's a SpongeBob Christmas the added appeal of holiday classics like Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer.

Bonus Features

Although the SpongeBob Christmas DVD doesn't come with a ton of Bonus Features, there are still a couple of fun extras worth checking out, like:

  • Behind-the-Scenes Animatic: A featurette that takes you behind-the-scenes with the animators to see how the stop-motion animation characters were created.
  • Santa's Eyes and Hot Fruitcake MP3 Compatible Songs: You need a DVD Rom Drive on your PC or Max to use this feature, but if you love the songs in the film, you'll be all over these songs this holiday season.
  • Yulelog: the flickering Yulelog is a Christmas tradition (especially since not every apartment or house has an actual fireplace). The SpongeBob Yulelog is a cute take on this, just showing us a cartoon fire with SpongeBob sitting in front of you.

The Bottom Line

SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas! has eye-popping visuals, the stop-motion animation element adds a whole new cute and quaint look and feel to pure-hearted Sponge and his Bikini Bottom pals. It's a tall order to try and make a Christmas special that can compare to a classic like Rudolph, but while It's a SpongeBob Christmas may not endure in the same way, it's a great new holiday movie to kick off the season that everyone in the family can enjoy.

It included a lot of mature themes and it really connects with today's older youth. You mean violence wise? Not just that, but the show tells the stories of the characters finding themselves. Take Asami for example. A lot of people have a late relative and another relative involved in some kind of trouble. She had her relationships AND family business to take care of, which relates to some of today's youth who feel like they have the whole world on their shoulders. They're starting to have to take responsibility for things they can hardly manage, and seeing the triumph of a character like Asami is truly inspiring. Her mother's dead, her father's in prison, her boyfriend was stolen from her, and her business nearly failed. But she did not give up, which sends a positive message to today's generation of teens. Mako was not stolen from Asami he just chose Korra and everyone knows that thats what people wanted. As messed up as that sounds its the truth.
