American Idol: Season 12, Week 17 :: Top 3 Performances

May 09, 2013

This week on American Idol (Season 12, Week 17), the top 3 visit their hometowns and perform 3 songs each. Read Kidzworld’s recap of the “Top 3 Performances,” which aired on May 8th, 2013 to discover what you missed.

It was an emotional week when each of the top 3 contestants - Angie, Candice and Kree - returned to their hometowns for a special performance. Each was greeted with an overwhelming amount of supporters. Emotions were running high, especially for Kree who returned to her childhood home and revisited the memories of her parents' deaths. This week, the contestants sang 3 songs each, and for the first time, they didn't get to choose their own. Round 1 was Jimmy's picks, round 2 was the judges' picks and round 3 was the production team's picks.

Kree Harrison

In round 1, Kree sang "Perfect" by Pink. The judges said she didn't seem as nervous as she often does, and they wished the song had been longer. However, she didn't put the passion into the song that the lyrics required. Her second song was "Here Comes Goodbye" by Rascal Flatts, which was her best performance of the night. After watching the hometown video, the song resonated with her, causing her to put so much emotion into her performance. The production team's song was an uptempo country song, which wasn't a wise choice for her at this stage of the game. The judges said that she did well, but her voice is bigger than that song.

Angie Miller

Angie's first song was "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word" by Elton John. While she sang the song beautifully, the judges were a little upset that she didn't play the piano since that's Elton John's trademark. While the song didn't hit Nicki emotionally, Mariah thought it was one of her best performances to date. The judges chose "Try" by Pink for her second song. Pink's vocals are more suited to Angie than Kree, so it was a good song for her, even if she did go off key several times. Her last song was yet another Emeli Sande song, making this the third time Angie has covered this artist. The judges loved it, though it didn't come across as a powerful way to end the show.

Candice Glover

Jimmy's choice for Candice was "One Love." She changed the arrangement to fit her big voice. Unfortunately, while it was good, it lost the integrity of the song. For her second song, the judges chose "Next To Me" by Emeli Sande. Again she sang well, but the song held her back. Her final song showed why she deserves to win. The production team chose "Somewhere" from West Side Story. Randy said this was the second time this season that she's given one of the greatest vocals in American Idol history. After that performance, Angie and Kree shouldn't stand a chance.
