Biggest Sports Events of 2002

Jan 16, 2019

From the game-winning field goal of the Super Bowl to the disappointing performance by America's basketball Dream Team... Here are Kidzworld's picks for the biggest sports moments of 2002.

Super Bowl XXXVI

Talk about drama, baby! Adam Vinatieri kicked a 48-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to give the New England Patriots a 20-17 upset victory over the heavily favored St. Louis Rams. It was the first time a Super Bowl had ever been won on the final play of the game. Patriots' quarterback, Tom Brady, was named the game's MVP for guiding New England to their first Super Bowl title.

Game 7 of World Series

With the help of timely hitting and a Rally Monkey, the Anaheim Angels were giant killers in 2002. The Angels defeated the Giants 4-1 in Game 7 of the World Series to win California's baseball bragging rights. It was the first World Series title for the Angels. Third baseman, Troy Glaus, won the Series MVP award.

Olympic Hockey Gold Medal Game

Canada won its first gold medal in 50 years with a 5-2 victory over the USA at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The game featured hockey's biggest NHL stars including Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman, from Canada, and Brett Hull and Mike Modano from the USA.

USA Defeats Mexico at 2002 World Cup

The USA shocked most of the world by defeating Mexico 2-0 at the 2002 World Cup of soccer. With the victory, the Americans advanced to the quarterfinals of the World's biggest sporting event and pulled off one of the greatest upsets in US sports history.

USA Dream Team Loses at World Basketball Championships

While the US soccer team was one of 2002's biggest surprises, the US basketball team was one of the year's biggest disappointments. The US Dream Team, which included NBA superstars like Reggie Miller, Paul Pierce and Baron Davis, played a nightmare of a tournament and finished with losses to Argentina, Yugoslavia and Spain. It was the first time in 59 games that the United States had lost. They had not lost a game since they began using NBA players in international competitions.

"The 2002 NBA Finals when the Lakers swept the New Jersey Nets was the biggest moment of 2002. So to all you Laker haters, forget you all."
