Malcolm in the Middle, Nov. 19/2000

So, Mom and Dad decide to take Malcolm and his brothers on a vacation to some casino resort. Sound like fun? Well, if you're with Malcolm's parents, nothing can simply be fun - it's always an adventure.

As soon as they arrive, Malcolm and Reese decide to head for the pool. But one problem. They're not allowed to go to the pool without an adult, and Mom just wants to rest and Dad just wants to spend the day at the casino. Dad starts to lose a lot of money, so Malcolm "the genius" decides to help out by counting cards. But you can't do that. So they got taken away by security, they lost the $3000 they had won, and they got banned from the casino.

Dad then gets the bright idea to take everyone on a trip to a desert ghost town. Dewey is scared of ghosts so he stayed at the hotel. That turned out to be a good idea, since everyone else got lost in the desert - with no food or water. And things went worse from there. Malcolm, Reese, and Dad found a fence which they climbed over to find help. Well, the other side of the fence turned out to be an army firing range - with real bullets being fired. Yikes! They manage to avoid getting shot, and find someone from the army who points them in the right direction. After a long walk through the desert, Malcolm Reese and Dad finally reach the safety of the hotel room. I bet they can't wait for the next family vacation.

It included a lot of mature themes and it really connects with today's older youth. You mean violence wise? Not just that, but the show tells the stories of the characters finding themselves. Take Asami for example. A lot of people have a late relative and another relative involved in some kind of trouble. She had her relationships AND family business to take care of, which relates to some of today's youth who feel like they have the whole world on their shoulders. They're starting to have to take responsibility for things they can hardly manage, and seeing the triumph of a character like Asami is truly inspiring. Her mother's dead, her father's in prison, her boyfriend was stolen from her, and her business nearly failed. But she did not give up, which sends a positive message to today's generation of teens. Mako was not stolen from Asami he just chose Korra and everyone knows that thats what people wanted. As messed up as that sounds its the truth.
