East meets West in San Francisco's Chinatown, where Tom Lee is thrown into a world of magic and monsters after his grandmother mysteriously dies.

The Tiger's Apprentice - A Magical Change

Tom Lee is an ordinary Chinese-American boy whose life is changed when he discovers he's the latest in a long line of magical Guardians. For now, his grandmother is the Guardian of the phoenix, a creature who has the gift to transform bad hearts into good ones. But when she's killed by an evil monster who wants the powerful talisman to destroy the world, a tiger named Mr. Hu must step into the Guardian role, making Tom his apprentice.

The Tiger's Apprentice - Ancient Arts

After learning of the terrible consequences should the phoenix fall into the wrong hands, Tom begins to learn ancient Chinese magic in order to carry on his grandmother's role. Though he and Mr. Hu, along with his friends, a fire-breathing dragon, a golden monkey and a flying rat, butt heads along the way, they realize they must all come together in order to fight off the evil that lies ahead.

The Tiger's Apprentice - Bottom Line

The Tiger's Apprentice: Book One is an action-packed fantasy about the battle between good and evil. Though you may not know much about Chinese history, you'll learn a lot about the magic of this country after reading this book.
