Magic: The Gathering: Guildpact Expansion Set Review

Magic: The Gathering is the original dueling card game and it's all about powerful wizards battling with spells, creatures and magical artifacts. Guildpact is the second expansion to feature the new guilds and crazy color-combos in the 165-card set. We have the 411 on the new combos, new powers and new Theme Decks in our review!

Treachery, Teamwork and new Guildpact Powers!

Guildpact is all about taking the five colors of Magic and teaming them up in wacky new ways with new powers. The team-ups are called guilds and here they are.
  • Gruul - Green and Red team up to bring you the biggest creatures ever!
  • Izzet - Blow your opponent apart with powerful Red and Blue spell cards.
  • Orzhov - Use Black and White cards to cripple your opponent and slowly crush them.

  • There are also new powers you can unleash! Check 'em out here.
  • Bloodthirst - Creatures with Bloodthirst get stronger if you damage an opponent before you summon them.
  • Haunt - These ghosty cards come back to haunt something when they get used.
  • Replicate - These cards let you pay more Mana to use their powers more than once!
  • Guildpact Theme Deck Reviews

This new expansion comes with three new Theme Decks to let you unleash the power of the guilds. Here they are, and our reviews!
  • Code of the Orzhov
  • Gruul Wilding
  • Izzet Gizmometry
  • Powerful Powers and Wicked Combos in Guildpact

Say it with me, Gruul! It combines the huge creatures and fast Mana of Green with the super attack cards of Red for some serious opponent squishing! Izzet is fun cuz they're all about blasting stuff and wacky artifacts. Replicate is great too, especially for decks that have lots of Mana so you can use one card three or four times at once!

    Guildpact Flaws and Weaknesses

Haunt, ick, this power is… confusing and hard to use. Bloodthirst is decent, but you have to know how to use it properly or it's only ho-hum. Basically, the powers are ok, but they're tricky unless you're a Magic dueling pro. And, the Orzhov cards are duller than math class!

Final Words on the Guildpact Expansion Set

Guildpact is a tricky set. It has lots of good cards for experienced duelists, but new Magic players should go check out the 9th Edition or Ravnica: City of Guilds cards first, then grab these once they have some dueling skills.
