We've been previewing the action, adventure, and critters in the new Over the Hedge video game for weeks and now it's here! It's based on the new computer-animated Dreamworks movie and lets you play as four characters from the movie – RJ the raccoon, Verne the turtle, Hammy the squirrel and Stella the skunk. It's available for all kinds of gamin' systems, including the GBA and Nintendo DS, and we're reviewing the Gamecube, PC, PS2 and Xbox console versions right here!

What's Goin' On in Over the Hedge?

All the action in Over the Hedge has you controlling one of the four forest critters while another follows you around as backup. Each critter can run and jump while using close, ranged or special attacks to fend off traps and angry animals. There are different kinds of levels, bosses, items to collect to unlock bonuses and way more.

Awesome Possum Stuff in Over the Hedge!

The coolest thing about this game is that a friend can hop in and join you as the second critter anytime, then bail and let the computer take over again. There are also lots of different levels, so you're always doing something new. You can also collect weird hats, play as four different wise-cracking animals and unlock three different mini-games.

Hairballs and Rat Traps in Over the Hedge

The biggest bummer about this game is that the humor is weak. The critters try to be "all that" and crack jokes, but about half of 'em are stinkers. The mini-games are ho-hum too. Oh, and don't ever, ever, ever feed any of the food the critters in this game eat to any real-life animals. It'll make them awfully sick if you do.

Over the Hedge Critter Crazyness or Catastrophe?

Over the Hedge is a fun game with a quadruple dose of cute critters and a few flaws. There's plenty of gamin' fun to unlock and being able to have a second player jump into the mayhem at any time is a serious bonus.

Over the Hedge Thumbs Up:

  • A friend can jump in at any time!
  • Lots of variety in the levels.
  • Cute critters, especially Hammy!
  • Tons of things to collect and unlock.
  • Over the Hedge Thumbs Down:

  • The humor falls flat!
  • So-so mini-games.
  • Don't feed any of the food in this game to real animals.
  • Over the Hedge Game Rating:

Over the Hedge is available for: Gamecube, GBA, Nintendo DS, PS2, and Xbox.
