Comic Review - Joss Whedon's Fray # 1

Fray

Now don't get me wrong! I truly believe that Joss Whedon can walk on water. If there was a church, I'd be in the choir singing His Almighty praises. He brings truth and life to the words that his characters speak. They are quick and smart without seeming unreal. Just imagine how good the X-MEN movie could have been if they had used his script!

So you can imagine how stoked I was to hear that he was going to get all Kevin Smithy and try his hand at skinny books. Hmmm... You can guess where I'm going with this can't ya? Fray, or Buffy Beyond as I've taken to calling it, is the story of a street smart 23rd Century (I'm just guessin' here) chick who is about to discover that she is the Chosen One. Buffy's got to kick-off some time right?

Anyway, Melaka Fray or Mel to her close and personal, is an extreme thief (ok maybe more Faith than Buffy) working for some fish guy named Gunther. The patter between Mel and fish boy is the highlight of #1. (Check out Gunthers art collection.) Nothing about the idea is duh because the whole Chosen One/demon thing is a given right! Been there, slayed that. There is enough otherworldly stuff to keep the faithful all blissy until Buffy returns in the Fall but this is Joss Whedon we're talking about. Where are the Zander zingers, the Spikey slags. But hey, even God has his off days, right? I mean c'mon, pleather?
