The question is stated in the title. A lot of different countries usually teach different languages in schools.

Do you think the U.S. should require all students to take a certain number of years of a foreign language?

If so how many years?

If not, why?

Where I live, you are required to do at least six years of French. It annoys a lot of people, but I think it's very beneficial in communicating with others. English isn't the only language in the world. If we want to be a collective society, we should learn to understand each other.

Here's a little fact I just remembered.

To get into a 4 year collage, you must have I think it was 2 foreign language classes taken. Thats for U.S.

I think that taking a language for your first year in high school should be mandatory, and those who enjoy it or want to pursue it can continue throughout high school. smile Why force the ones who aren't interested in learning a language, when they won't bother continuing it after school? Unless of course you live somewhere where people speak a variety of languages..

We're kind of like that at our high school in New Zealand. We have our main classes (maths english etc) and then the additional classes (Maori, Food and Nutrition, Drama, Japanese etc) that we rotated through to see what they're like (in year 9), then this year (year 10) we chose like two of those subjects and then the next year (year 11) we choose all our subjects.

I'm in the middle. Yes it's great to learn a 2 language but to force a student I believe a student should choose that right.
