*For the sake of argument, I'll over-simplify the evolutionary process.*
When fish first ventured onto land, they had to evolve to breath oxygen.
They had to grow lungs and a respiratory system.
They simply adapted to whatever was in the air.
If Carbon Monoxide was floating around, they would've evolved to breath that and survive.
This is why micro-organisms are able to survive on distant moons and planets, they just evolve to live in whatever conditions they are presented with.
