You'll notice a few thousand years back, people believed in gods that controlled the sun and the night, and everything. Then people dropped those religions and moved on to religions that were geared more towards mono-theism. (i.e. Christianity.) The reason for that is we understand why the sun rises and sets, and why the tide switches between high and low. If people were smart enough to figure that out, why aren't they smart enough to comprehend that a god is not necessary? Is it because they don't want to think that this life is they get? Or is it they're just scared what might happen if they don't believe?
