Almost as if to spite her more logically functioning mind, Nina had always tried to believe in the supernatural- with varying degrees of success. As she slipped on her shoes and finally bothered to get out of bed, she reminded herself that although it was unlikely this book was on the grounds of Zauberkunst Institute, it was certainly possible. Well, by most understandings of the world it wasn’t, but trying to find this “magical source of power” couldn’t hurt, right? Lazily putting on her small panda toboggan, she slowly opened the door out of her bedroom. The yearly search was about to begin, and she might as well get there a bit early.

The lights were out at this point, adding a bit of a “spoopy” vibe to the entire area. Perfect for scaring someone. She would have to be sure to sneak a few spoops into the search. Either way, she had navigated through the halls half asleep and dead inside way too many times to lose her way. She felt bad for the poor freshmen who had not yet faced the challenge of getting to class without any caffeine nor will to live. After monologuing to herself for several minutes about the comedic genius of the Bee Movie, the main entrance was in her sights.

Was it just her or did everyone seem more loud- or to put it bluntly- idiotic than she remembered. No, things were always this way, and she recognized several of the students standing there. There was Verona, the resident special snowflake who honestly was more cringey than Nina’s shorts. However, she was a fellow hat wearer, and so she had to respect her opinions, no matter how odd they might be. At least she was fairly entertaining. That meant that she probably wouldn’t be bored for the duration of the search. There was Matthias, every Starbucks frequenters dream, who honestly didn’t seem to have any discernible personality other than kind of hot if you like that sort of thing.

Making her way over to them, she made sure to look as annoying, popular, and pretty as possible- which is kind of hard when you’re wearing a men’s shirt and a panda toboggan- just to test how annoying Verona would get. However, most people wouldn’t mistake her for popular blindfolded. Deciding to drop the schtick, she simply yelled, “Yo, whaddup squadfam!” as she reached the group.

----------

Jasper was the last one in the locker room, as he pulled on his 3 year old t-shirt. Lacrosse practice had ended about 20 minutes ago, and the yearly search for the book- which totally existed- was about to begin. He was eager to look, even if they might not find it that year. Just spending time with people in order to achieve a common goal sounded fun enough! And by now he had spent so long daydreaming about it that he might miss the actual event. It was a pretty far walk from the field to the main entrance, but if he didn’t take any detours he should make it.

One of the side entrances was pretty close, so he decided to get on his way and not get distracted and get there on time and not make a fool of himself! Jogging his way over to the entrance, he made his way through the hallways fairly undisturbed. However, one sound stopped him from victory in his goal of making no detours. “Hey, you want the last of dinner?” a voice called out, and he immediately recognized it as lunch lady Matilda. They had become fairly close from all the time Jasper spent in the cafeteria, and he couldn’t resist the smell of delicious french fries. He bolted into the cafeteria, grabbed the fries, and ran, quickly reaching the entrance hall.

Eating his fries and scouting the room, he tried to spot anyone in his group. None of his friends were in it, so he would have to rely on his memories of them in the hallway. A bright red tuft of hair revealed itself, causing Jasper to hone in on it and nearly run over said tuft of red hair. Looking at his group- the girl with the octopus hat was odd but it was honestly her choice and you should respect that- he smiled. “Hefflo!” he chirped, and realizing how strange he sounded, swallowed his fries and repeated himself. “Hello!” he said again, smiling cheesily.

He didn’t recognize either of the children with hats, but he did know that only one person in the school had hair that bright. Matthias, the school heartthrob, had impossibly bright and fluffy red hair. He knew close to nothing else about him, but his hair was certainly something to be admired. He looked kind of like a cute lil’ tomato, except giant and around a foot taller than Jasper. Then there was Elisa, the only girl in the school who could near match Matthias’ popularity. She seemed nice, if a bit superficial. In any case, hopefully this would be fun!

----------

Tradition was an amazing thing. It would allow children searching the school grounds in the dark unsupervised to be approved by both the majority of the student council and the principal for yet another year. This book should be searched for by professionals, not children! Either way, the student council approved it, so Helen was stuck with supervising a group of hormonal children who would run off at a moment’s notice. Sure, she was the same age as or younger than most of them, but that didn’t matter! She was much more mature and this was unacceptable!

Naturally, Helen arrived at the event an hour early to prepare and just kind of sit there. She watched people slowly filter in, identifying the trouble makers and people she would need to keep an eye on. This included mostly everyone, especially anyone who looked at her as they entered. She kept a vigilant eye, watching out for nearly an hour. The event was about to begin, and suddenly, she saw something that she nearly couldn’t believe. A scourge on humanity! The darkest plane of oblivion!

French fries.

She rushed over in a second, immediately ripping the french fries out of the hands of the
ginger-haired criminal who had committed such a heinous deed. She dumped them in the trash and smiled triumphantly. “No food will be allowed while searching, so it’s best that we dispose of it now!” She chirped, smiling at the now confused ginger. His smile slowly turned to a frown, and he muttered “Oh, okay.” Putting her hands on her hips, she identified this as her group that she was supervising and totally wasn’t just a regular member of!

“Hello! It seems we’ll be working together tonight. I’m your supervisor and student council vice president, Helen!” she chirped, pointing aggressively at each member of the team. “The search will be starting shortly, so I might as well join you!”

Vera quickly glanced around the rest of the room, noticing some others beginning to join the group. First, there was Matthias, some stupid basic guy who looked and acted like every teen heartthrob ever... he irritated her. And even worse was Elisa, the almighty queen bee of the school- who just so happened to be the winning contender for the symptoms of "superficial idiot". Next came some ridiculous-looking girl in what seemed to be a panda outfit-thing. Didn't she know pandas were the most mainstream bear? To be fair, she was dealing with some pretty unacceptable people, so she couldn't really be surprised. Another continued to follow: some guy she'd vaguely seen before because he was popular and did sports.

It was at that moment that those horrifically-mainstream words escaped Panda-Girl's mouth. Vera was so shocked that she couldn't even speak at first.
"Yo, whaddup squadfam?"
Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. How did she sleep at night? She didn't even look all that popular, and yet she embodied everything about those idiot popular people! She wasn't going to stand for this. It was within around a minute that a shrill, high-pitched yell broke out across the group.

"What are you doing?!" Vera practically screeched at Panda-Girl, "First, you have the nerve to turn up here in something as generic as some panda trash, and now you go saying 'Squadfam'? You're everything wrong with the world!"
She pouted, crossing her arms. In all honesty, she looked like a young child, but she didn't care. She was going to show this mainstream loser just who's boss!
"Don't even think about making some lame remark about me, either!" She arrogantly grinned. "You mainstreamers have no idea the thought that goes into my every action. Do you think I stand out for no reason? You guys just ruin everything that's artistic." With a smug grin still firmly on her face, she turned away, satisfied with her actions. How could such an inexperienced meme-r ever make a sensible rebuttal?

---

Matthias found more and more people joining the group, feeling awkwardly squashed-in. He didn't show it on his face, instead keeping a placid expression as he watched a few more pool into the group. There was a tired-looking, lilac-haired girl who he'd never seen before in his life joining. Did she go here at all? If she even knew about this book-search, then probably, but he'd at least have seen her once. Putting that out of his mind, he continued to watch for others, not exactly wanting to make conversation with an eccentric possible-loudmouth, a girl he'd never seen in his life, or his demon of a sister.

Next, came a boy with ginger hair, who was quite a bit shorter than him, munching on some fries, as it appeared. He definitely knew who that was: Jasper. They didn't talk much mostly because the redhead wasn't keen on sport - he was pretty much useless at it - but from what it looked like, he was a pretty nice person. Optimistic, sure, but nice. He always had a smile on his face, and... maybe he should just leave it there. Hearing him say a relatively-short greeting, Matthias thought that he probably should return it; nobody likes to talk to thin air.
"Hi," He smiled kindly, "I guess we're in the same group, then."

Not long after his reply, the area soon filled up with the shrill sound of yelling- from Verona, no less. He glanced over uncomfortably, and concluded that it wouldn't be a good idea to get involved. Another girl had entered the group by now- a blonde girl, who happened to be the student council's vice president, Helen. She was the one who started up the rule about one member of the student council being present with each group, as far as he remembered. She introduced herself, and loudly proclaimed that the search would be starting shortly. If what was going on presently was a sign of what was going to happen tonight, it was gonna be a really long night.

---

Elisa watched as the group grew, seeming to find something negative to say about each new member. The girl in the panda hat-thing looked absurd, and her greeting was far less than acceptable. She put that aside, and simply wore her amiable smile. Jasper, the next one to arrive, was eating food, clearly- she didn't know him well at all, but he played lacrosse or something like that... she didn't care enough to find out, quite frankly. Putting off greetings for a bit and simply giving a friendly wave as Jasper said his "hello", she stood around for a bit, waiting to get this over with.

The girl in the panda hat hadn't been here long, but already, the girl with the octopus(?) hat had already begun yelling about the former being a "mainstreamer" or something... so she was one of those people, then. Elisa thought that people like her were godly-annoying. Attempting to become the mediator of the situation, she let her "kindness" come through to calm them down.
"Guys, we really shouldn't be fighting," she soothed, "We're gonna be spending a long night together, and the last thing we want is any fights... it'll just go on forever!"
This earned her a dirty look from the blue-haired octopus hat girl. The brunette didn't care.

The next "big event" (she didn't exactly class it as "big, but that didn't matter) that occurred that night was the appearance of the student council vice president, Helen. In all honesty, Elisa didn't exactly like her; she was far too loud and obnoxious, always caring about what was and wasn't approved in a school environment or something like that. According to her, the search would be starting fairly soon. Finally- she could just focus on "finding" some fictional effigy of magic instead of dealing with people fighting and sorting out their problems. Masking her slight sigh of relief with a quiet yawn, she began to wait around, glancing at the others around her.
