Then came the Dark Days, where rebels rose up against the country that fed them, loved them, and protected them. When at last the traitors were defeated, we made a treaty that swore we never would rise up again. And so it was decreed that each year, all the districts of Panem would offer up one courageous man and woman to fight to the death, against all odds.
