I know some rules. I fade in and out of math class but sometimes i get it:
Ok, say this is ur problem:
(-5) - (-1)
Two negatives makes a possitive, not literally but thats the trick.
In other words, you change the middle minus sign to a plus sign.:
(-5) + (-1)
then, you take away the negative signs.:
5 + 1
now hopefully u know 5 + 1 = 6. the last step is to add a negative sign to your answer.:
-6
Therefore, (-5) - (-1) = -6

Yeah, I have a few, they''re kind of a trip. If any of them help feel free to use them.
ex.1 -9-(-4)= -9+4 This is because the two negative signs at the end make a positive. If there are two right next to eachother they become one.
ex.2 -7+-6= -13 This is because it''s just like normal adding. All you have to do is add a negative sign in front.
ex.3 -1+3= -2 This is because you look at the bigger number and do whatever the sign in front of the smaller one tells you.
ex.4 -8 times -3= 24 This is because whenever you multiply two negatives you get a positive. Think of it as two wrongs make a right.
ex.5 -5 times 2= -10 This is because if you have two different signs, you always take the negative when multiplying.
ex.6 -6 divided by -3= 2 You follow the same rule as when multiplying, you simply divide as you would but look at the signs. If it is two negatives you get a positive.
ex.7 -9 divided by 3= -3 This is because you always take the negative sign when you have two different signs you are dividing by as in multiplication.
Short cut:
- times - =positive
- times + =negative
+ times + =positive
+ plus + =Positive
- plus - =negative
- minus - =negative plus a positive number
- plus + = sign of the bigger number
- minus + =sign of the bigger number

when you are subtracting integers it is almost like adding.
example
nbsp; -2 - {-1}
nbsp; -2 - {-1}what you do is change the subtraction sign into an addition sign, then then change
the negative one into a positive one. and negative two 
lus 1 is negative 1.
lus 1 is negative 1.just go bam bam {as in when you are changing the two minus signs}

(-4) says the same
The first part of the rule is ADD
so cange the sub. sign to an add. sign
the next part of the rule is ITS OPPOSITE
so find the opposite of pos. 9
that would be neg. 9
the problem now reads
(-4) + (-9)
the answer is neg. 13
even if the problem read (-4) - (-9)
it would read (-4) + +9
the answer would be pos. 5

Its pretty simple(says an 11 year old who daydreams through every math lesson..ME!)heres an example of what to do:
Step 1- (-4) - (-3)=???
Step 2- (-4) +(-3)=???
Step3- 4 + 3=6
Step 4- (-4) - (-3)= (-6)
ya see?my teacher last year called it 'reverse phsycology' meaning..whatever the calc. is, do the oppisite...so if the sum is askin you to subtract negatives, you would add positives! understand?!? you do?! GOOD! lolz..cummon..im only 11 and I understand it!
