Chapter 36
My eyes glance in all directions of the store as I bite my lip anxiously. I lift wrist and check the time. Quarter past two.
Where the heII is Brendan?
I wince as people push past me, causing me to strip over a small cardboard box on the floor next to me. Sighing I grab hold of the stroller’s handle and pull myself up, spinning around instantly when I feel someone’s hand on my shoulder.
“What do you- oh,” I stop suddenly, seeing Brendan frowning at me, “Sorry, I’ve just, got a lot on my mind right now.”
“It’s okay,” Brendan replies, standing next to me, “But, what’s up?”
Freezing on the spot, I slowly turn my head away from him and lean over the top of the stroller to fix Skye’s hat; ignoring Brendan’s question.
“Amelia,” he says, grabbing hold of my arm lightly, “What is it?”
“I just- no it’s nothing,” I reply quickly, then look up from Skye to him slowly. I look at him uncertainly, his expression showing he’s not completely convinced. My eyes look around me, trying to think of anything to use to change the subject. Then I come across Skye in her stroller, and immediately a small smile appears on my face.
“I thought you wanted to see Skye?” I ask, poking him in his arm.
“Who?” Brendan asks, tilting his head to the side in perplexity.
“Skye,” I say frowning at him, “You’re daughter.”
Brendan doesn’t say anything, and instead walks around to the front of the stroller, a grin spreading across his face when he catches sight of Skye. I bite my lip apprehensively as I watch him, the feeling of guilt creeping over me. Brendan looks up at me, still grinning, and takes hold of the stroller’s handles.
“What are you doing?” I ask, almost tripping over an empty bag as I follow him out the store doors. Brendan grins at me and lets go of one of the handles, putting his arm around me as me walk.
“It’s finally me, you and Skye; alone,” he replies, holding me close to him. My heart skips a beat as he speaks and I react by pulling away from him unintentionally.
“Amelia?” Brendan asks, stopping to turn and look at me. My mind starts clouding over with thoughts, causing a headache to begin forming in my head. Brendan stares at me in silence, tears welling up in his eyes; making them shine under the bright, afternoon sun.
“Who is it?” he ask, anger and jealously thickly coating his voice.
“N-no one,” I say, feeling tears fill my own eyes. Brendan looks down at the floor and shakes his head.
“Don’t lie to me,” he says, looking back up to me; his voice sounding shaky. I stare at him for a moment, my heart at breaking point. Brendan frowns at me, stepping back from the stroller.
“I thought you were different,” he says, his voice seeming to get caught in his throat as he struggles to form his words.
“Brendan, please…” But my sentence trails off as Brendan walks away, tears rolling down his flushed cheeks.
Tears
I've caused him to shed.
