Chapter 1, part 1.
-----------------
10:48 PM were the figures her clock glinted back at her. 'Way past my curfew.' thought Emily, glaing at her clock, wishing desperately that it wasn't right. She trudged down the nearly empty street, feeling very much like she was in an Edgar Allen Poe book. A gust of wind flew past her, ruffling her auburn hair. She reached up instinctively to smooth it down before another gust of wind blew, this time lifting her skirt.
Fifteen minutes and four seconds later she found herself standing in front of her apartment door. Mum wasn't here yet...she never was back before midnight anyway...not since the divorce. Things hadn't been smooth since Dad had left; Mum always drank herself into oblivion every night and would stumble back home, apologising incoherently. And Dad was always too busy to visit now. "What a great life." Emily muttered to herself, finding the house key beneath the doormat. She pushed the door open and after locking it, she shrugged her coat off and threw herself onto her bed, not caring about the fact that she was still fully dressed.

12:51 AM.
Emily blinked her eyes open and looked around at her messy bedroom. A distant ringing reached her ears. It was faint, so faint that Emily would've believed this was just a dream and that the telephone ringing was her imagination. She rolled off her bed and her body thudding against the floor reminded her that she wasn't dreaming. She got up dazedly, and annoyed about having her sleep interrupted and found her way to the living room.
Mum obviously wasn't back yet. The living room was still clean and didn't reek of alco.hol. Emily placed her hand on the reciever and picked it up.
"Hello?"
