There are a few things I would like to address: A salt Rifles, violent video games, purchasing/obtaining guns, and a world without guns.
First, A salt rifles. They have been banned before, and will probably be banned again. However, such a ban only stops any more of them from being manufactured. One can still go to a gun show and buy as many as they want. *I've been to a few, there are a salt rifles a-plenty.* Also, people already own a salt rifles. You can't prevent someone from using an a salt rifle they've owned for 5 years in a school shooting if they wanted to.
Another thing, people seem to be under the misconception that you can only kill people with an a salt rifle. This is ridiculous. You can kill a man with a pistol, a knife, a brick, a pillow, your bare hands.. need I go on? Even if you took every single gun away, people will figure different ways to do it. How do you think war was waged before guns?
Next, violent video games. First, let me just say, I own every Call of Duty since WaW and I feel not the need to go kill a bunch of people for the heck of it. There is a point in life where your sense of morality matures to the point where it's not going to change anymore. Even if you can get the people to stop making these games, people are still going to play them.
Now we shall discuss purchasing/obtaining guns. When you buy a gun license, a background check is done on you, which makes total sense! However, there is no check on mental history. That alone would stop a lot of gun killings in America. But, a person can steal the guns from someone else. Two great examples are my neighbor who killed himself with his brother's gun, and of course the recent school shooting. The solution to this problem? Checks on family members for mental disabilities and criminal backgrounds.
Finally, a world without guns. If the Gov't walked into every house in america tomorrow and took all the guns, this country would be much less safe for three reasons..
1. Criminals would feel that it is safer to steal our stuff, therefore they would.
2. With guns, anyone can protect themselves. Without guns, it would quickly become a survival of the fittest type world. The violence would be exacted on the weak.
3. Our possession of guns scares other countries. For example, imagine Russia, China, and North Korea, all decided to invade America. Let's say they also defeat our military. They would hardly be able to jump out of the planes before a group of rednecks with hunting rifles use 'em for target practice. It would be a real-life Red Dawn. However, without guns, we would be quickly overrun and turned into a totalitarian state.
The sad but true thing about all of this, is you can't stop someone like the guy who killed those children. If someone is willing to die for what they want to do (i.e. Terrorists), there is no way to stop them. The only thing we can do to slow them down, is to arm ourselves as best we can, so we can defend ourselves against any threat... Both foreign and domestic.
