I've heard that a lot of schools are either wanting to rename Columbus Day, or just get rid of it all together. They're teaching kids that Columbus was bad to the Indians and was just a horrible person.
Now, what I've always heard, is that Christopher Columbus was an explorer who thought that America was the Indies. And that he and the Native Americans actually worked together. He didn't poison them or treat them badly.
So, what do you think about this? Please comment!

um, ya, Columbus was friendly to the Indian (that I'm aware of) but I don't think he should actually be credited with finding North America, also, the founding of North America led to many horrendous actions

He was the first person after the Middle Ages to discover America. So he can be credited for that.

I'm SO sick of people claiming that we "stole" America from the Native Americans or Indians.
First and foremost, we stole nothing. To the best of my knowledge, Indians did not believe that the land belonged to them, let alone have the concepts of ownership or nationalism. Ironically and hypocritically enough, many Indians had territories exclusive to their tribes, which they fought over. Even the Indians were hypocrites. That said, how could we steal something that they didn't claim to possess in the first place?
Secondly, there's nothing "native" about "Native Americans" at all. Most "Native Americans" are of Asiatic descent. When they migrated here, did they steal what is now known as North America? Didn't it belong to the wildlife that existed before their arrival? By "anti" logic, shouldn't the Indians leave America too? Afterall, they too, migrated here. Shouldn't they give it back to the wildlife and retreat to Asia? While Indians profess that the land didn't belong to them, they certainly had no problem inhabiting the land.

I'm sorry to be a spoil-sport but Columbus never actually set foot in North America. He landed in 'the new world' in 1492 but 'the new world' includes some land masses other than just North America, in fact the closest he got to North America was the island of San Salvador.

North America was found by somebody, vikings, Natives, or for Quebec, Jaques Cartier, or whoever, before Columbus found it. So when columbus is all like "OH YEAH I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT!" He is acting like a total concieted jerk.
