(Okay... here I go...)
I open my eyes, and the first thing my brain registers is that it's dark. A few seconds later, I realise that my room shouldn't be dark, because of the annoyingly thin curtains at the orphanage. I also realise that I woke up at will, instead of having the door almost hammered down by the plump owner of the orphanage, screaming at the top of her lungs to get up. I sit up, rubbing my eyes, and take a long breath through my nose. I tense up. That smell ... it's not of bleach and burnt toast, like the orphanage. Instead, it smells ... disgusting. Like a sewer, with mouldy, half-eaten food and human waste.
Slowly, I take my hand away from my eyes and wait for them adjust to my surroundings. My breath is faster and deeper, as panic creeps up my spine. I don't know where I am, but it's definitely not the orphanage. In fact, it's not even inside. A harsh wind rushes past me, chilling me to the bone. I shiver involuntarily and scramble to my feet. I'm barefoot, and wearing nothing but my, too-small, dirty, pale-blue nightgown. The sleeves are three inches above my wrists, and the hem is far above my knees. I've had it for five years, hence the smallness.
I mildly notice my cheek is stinging and I gingerly touch it. When I draw my hand away, I gasp when I see bIood on my fingertips. The panic is building, and I just want to scream. I begin to run, and run, and run. My brown, knotted hair flies around my face but I ignore it. My muscles scream in protest, but I don't listen. I just keep running. I notice the silhouette of a man in front of me, and I skid to a halt.
"Excuse me," I panted breathlessly. "Please help me. I don't know where I am."
The stranger turned.
