Abbreviating? We mostly use it because it's just easier to type. It started out with really big words (like, DNA is easier to say than deoxyribonucleic acid..) But now people use it for just about anything.. xDD

People use text slang because they can't type fast at all or they are lazy or both. Last year I stopped using it because I was starting to use it on homework assignments without realizing.
