Quiz! How Sun Savvy Are You?

You may love to have fun in the sun, but do you know how to do it safely? The hot weather and all that time you spend chillin' outdoors can cause sunburns, weird tan lines and heat rashes - but these summer mishaps can be prevented!

Before you head out the door, take a second to think about the effects of the scorching sun. Sure, it's great to soak up the rays and bronze your body, but what about the damage it can do? Test your sun safety smarts by taking Kidzworld's free online quiz. If you're already savvy, you won't experience any hot-weather horrors this summer!

So, how do you rate?

  • If you scored 0-30: You need to run to the mall and buy some sun protection cuz your body is aching from sunburns! You should always protect yourself by wearing sunscreen with SPF 15 (at least!) and shade your eyes with sunglasses. You've gotta take this quiz again!
  • If you scored 40-60: You may not be suffering from serious sunburns, but you still have one too many summer mishaps like chlorinated hair. Take precaution from the sun or else you'll end up looking like a red lobster all summer long!
  • If you scored 70-80: After getting that nasty sunburn last summer, you've taken the time to boost your sun smarts - good for you! You definitely know how to take care of yourself while soaking up the sun's rays.
  • If you scored 90-100: Congrats! With all your SPF know-how, you could design your own sunscreen! While it's great to be sun savvy, you don't have to avoid the sun completely. It's fun to spend time outdoors and chill in the sun. And remember, a bit of sunshine is good for your skin and bones.

  • When should you apply sunscreen so that you don't end up with blistering burns? About 15 minutes before I go out. Once I get to the beach. After an hour of tanning - I want to sneak in some sunscreen-less time. Never - I like to bronze my body. Wear sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside, since your skin needs time to absorb it. Quick - your crush is headed your way, so you reach into your bag to touch up your make-up, but all you find is a gooey gob of melted lipstick! How could this have been prevented? There's no way to prevent make-up from melting under the scorching sun. By tossing it into the cooler with the soda. I never have this problem cuz I don't wear make-up. By staying home - I knew I shouldn't have come to the beach! Toss your make-up into the cooler to prevent it from turning into goo. That way, you'll always be ready to flash your glossy lips at your crush! You fell asleep at the beach and now you've got crazy tan lines! What should you do? Use a self-tanning lotion to even it out. Slather SPF 1000 on the burned areas and expose the unburned areas to the sun. Stay out of the sun until my sunburn heals. Run and hide - no one can see me like this! Stay out of the sun until your skin is completely healed, or else you'll damage it even more. Why is it a faux pas to use the sun to zap your zits? The hot weather makes me sweat more, which clogs pores and produces more oil. The sun actually enlarges pores. Zits become darker and more noticeable when they're tanned. Using the sun as an acne-blaster increases the chance of skin damage. Although the sun dries up zits and makes them less noticeable, it's not a good idea since it can cause wrinkles and skin cancer. Instead, use pimple-fighting creams like salicylic acid to control acne. It's important to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun's rays, but what can you do to prevent a reverse-raccoon tan? Wear sunscreen on my entire face. Don't wear sunglasses. Wear sunscreen everywhere except on my eyelids. Wear a hat. You need to wear sunglasses to block out the sun's rays, but wearing sunscreen all over your face will reduce sunglass tan lines. You plan to hang at the pool all summer to show off your diving tricks to the cute lifeguard. What can you do to make sure your blonde locks don't turn green from the chlorinated water? Deep condition my hair. Coat my hair with cocoa butter. Rinse my hair with club soda immediately after swimming. All of the above. The green hair that develops from exposure to chlorine is related to the copper found in water. Using all these methods will get rid of chlorine-green hair. How often should you re-apply sunscreen? Every 30 minutes. Every two hours. Every four hours. Once is enough for me. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours because it washes off when you swim or sweat. You've got to kiss those hairy legs goodbye! But how can you shave your legs without getting nasty red razor bumps? Shave against the direction of hair growth. Hide razor burns by wearing a sarong. Change my razor blade often. Skip shaving altogether. To prevent razor burn, change your razor blade frequently, use a shaving gel and shave in the direction of hair growth. You want to use a self-tanner, but don't want to become streaky and orange like Garfield! How should you prepare? Moisturize just before applying the self-tanning lotion. Rinse away the self-tanner before it has a chance to dry. Buy orange hair dye to complement my orange skin. Exfoliate to slough away dead skin cells. Make sure you exfoliate and be sure to blend, blend, blend! If you botch it up, then massage baby oil onto your skin to dissolve the self-tanner and exfoliate. Oops! You forgot to re-apply sunscreen, got sunburned and now your skin is peeling! What should you do? Gently exfoliate and use a heavy-duty moisturizer. Hide out in my room until I'm no longer shedding. Nickname myself The Shedder. Start a collection of dead skin cells as I peel off every inch of flaky skin. Never, ever peel or pick at your flaky skin cuz exposing underdeveloped skin can cause infections. Exfoliate and moisturize your body until it completely heals.
