Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and the ever-crazy Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC are back - and just like you'd expect, they're better than ever. But I gotta warn ya - this ain't yer Mama's *NSYNC. The guys are edgier, stronger and have a much more mature (and confident) style.
Celebrity is yet another big step for the vocal group *NSYNC - a step away from that "boy band" image they hate so much. The first single, Pop should have been the first sign that this album would be different. It's full of techno beats, vocal FX, beatboxing and edgier hooks. But Pop was just the beginning. The title track, Celebrity, is even edgier and harder than Pop. Celebrity showcases each members vocal abilites and defines that "dirty pop" sound the boys have been talking about since No Strings Attached. The only way you can sit still while listening to this album is if you're tied to your chair. Seriously.
Besides the first single and the title track, there's The Two of Us which is an upbeat, fast-paced love song that kinda reminds me of Escapade by Janet Jackson. And then there's Up Against the Wall about grinding with a girl in a club (any volunteers out there?) Then there's the in-your-face The Game Is Over and See Right Through You which both have that 'Don't mess with me or you'll lose' message that Bye Bye Bye carried. The difference is these songs are edgier and catchier - who knew that was even possible with *NSYNC?
And *NSYNC finally got the ballads right! No more sappy 80s-oriented Richard Marx tunes. Gone is a clear, aching piece that uses Justin's voice to their fullest. Something Like You is breathtaking, both in lyrics and vocals. It was co-written by Justin - gee, what could the tribute to true love have been inspired by? (A certain Miss Spears, maybe?)
The theme of *NSYNC's album is obviously the ups and downs of being the hottest vocal group on the planet. And it comes right from the horses mouth - there is at least one member of *NSYNC with writing credits on nine of the 13 tracks. Probably the weakest tracks on the album (but I still don't skip over 'em) are the ones that *NSYNC didn't write. This just proves that the boys don't need anybody else to make a first class album. They may be celebrities but this album also proves they are artists. And talented ones at that.
