Get Involved With Surfing

C/O Universal Pictures
If you're adventurous and you dig the sun and the water, then loving surfing is inevitable. Kidzworld has the 411 on what you should know before jumping on a surfboard.
Surfing - Benefits
It may look super easy but it's actually one of the
toughest sports to get the hang of. You've gotta be prepared to swallow a ton of
salt water and spend a good portion of your first day under water with your surfboard
soaring high above your head. Despite the harsh learning curve, surfing is as
exhilarating as it looks in the movies - even if you don't look as glamorous doing it as the stars of
Blue Crush did. Surfing is also a great workout. It takes a lot of
stamina and strength to balance yourself on that board, especially with the strength of the wave. It's no wonder surfers like
Kelly Slater have rock hard bodies!
Surfing - Equipment
Obviously to start surfing you'll need a
surfboard. Depending on your age, size and skill, there are many
different styles of boards. Make sure you consult an expert at a surf shop on what's right for you before buying. You will also need a
wetsuit. Most oceans are cold, so it would be a good idea you wear at least a half-suit. Another essential in surfing is
surfboard wax, which keeps you from sliding off the board when you are either paddling up or when you are standing on your board. Other than that, all you need is some
sunscreen, an ocean and a
good attitude!
Surfing - Risks
Surfing is a lot of fun, but it can also be very
dangerous. The
current and waves can be very strong, so it's very important you are a strong
swimmer before you start learning how to surf. The possibility of
drowning is very realistic. Also, don't go to beaches where the tide is too strong or the waves are too big. Like any other sport, you have to start slow. Always go surfing with a friend and go to a
beach where there are other surfers and a
lifeguard.
Surfing - Getting Involved
Before you rush to the beach to catch some
wicked waves, you should probably look into some
lessons. Another great way to learn how to surf is to attend a
surfing camp. On top of learning how to surf the right way, you will also get the chance to meet some cool people and
potential surf buddies.
