At the age of nine, a young girl named Kelly Weir was diagnosed with cancer. She fought the cancer bravely and the doctors did everything they could for her but she passed away. In her last couple of months, she wrote a story about a Polka-dotted Zebra named Zink. What began with the story of Zink the Zebra became the Zink the Zebra Foundation. From there the story of Zink has inspired a play Zink: The Myth, The Legend, The Zebra and now a novel by Cherie Bennett.

Rebecca Rose Zaslow, Becky to her friends, is a sixth grader who dreams of becoming a famous singer. She just has to get over her stage fright and sing at her school talent show. Becky also has leukemia, a cancer that affects her bones and her blood.

Zink is Becky's story of dealing with leukemia. It's about how her friends and family deal with her illness and how Becky handles life in the hospital. It's also about a magical tribe of zebras that cheer her up when she's sick.

The Zebras have a life of their own in their magical African land. They've all got attitude, from wise old Papa Zeke to the heroic Ice Z and Shlep - the monkey who wants to be a Zebra.

Zink is a sad story of courage that's full of interesting characters. It's a great read if you want something with heart. Just make sure you bring some tissues - it's a tear jerker.
