Blockbuster Entertainment Awards

Dec 27, 2006

The Blockbuster Entertainment Awards are one of the only bigtime shows where video games get some respect. The 2001 awards were filled with big stars, big glitz, big glamour and awards for the most popular video games in the world.

In the middle of performances by Ricky Martin, appearances by *NSYNC and a barrage of fruit from Tom Green. Frankie Muniz - Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle - stepped up to the podium to say a few things about video games. Frankie let everyone know that video games aren't small potatoes. They're a big business, 7 billion dollars and growing. Video games are mainstream now, millions of happy gamers plug into their consoles and play games.

When it was time for the awards to be handed out it was none other than skater-god Tony Hawk who leapt onto stage on his skateboard to accept the 3 awards for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. The raddest, baddest skating game of all time won favorite game of the year on the Playstation, Dreamcast and Gameboy systems. A big win for Tony and the crew and they couldn't have picked a better game.

Behind the scenes a couple more awards were handed out. Mario Party 2 won for favorite N64 game. Madden NFL 2001 took home top honors on the Playstation 2. And the overall winner of favorite game of the year is Driver 2 - the undercover cop racing game with more attitude than a three year-old with a dirty diaper.

Next year is gonna be even bigger cuz they're gonna be covering the Xbox and the Gamecube on top of the current systems. Now if only they'd give awards to computer games...
