Stone Temple Pilots Get Their Start

Stone Temple Pilots came together in a strange way. Scott Weiland bumped into bassist Robert DeLeo at a Black Flag concert in Long Beach and realized they were both dating the same woman. Instead of beating each other silly they started jamming together. Their girl moved to Texas and the two guys moved into her San Diego apartment. They hooked up with drummer Eric Kretz and convinced Robert's brother Dean to be their guitarist.

Stone Temple Pilots Get Their Start

STP played their first gig at the Whisky in LA in 1990 under the name of Mighty Joe Young (isn't that a movie about a gorilla?) Two years later a booking artist caught their act and they were signed to Atlantic Records in 1992. The S.T.P. Motor Oil logo inspired them to change their name to Stone Temple Pilots, but the name doesn't really mean anything. The band released their first album Core in 1992 and the songs Plush and Sex Type Thing became big hits. In 1994 they released Purple.

Stone Temple Pilots' Rocky Road To Success

Scott Weiland struggled with his heroine addiction while recording their third album Tiny Music... Songs From The Vatican Giftshop, which came out in 1996. He was in and out of rehab so the band didn't put out their next album No.4 until 1999. In 1999 the band was side-tracked again when Scott Weiland ended up back in the slammer on drug related charges. The Stone Temple Pilots are released their fifth album Shangri-La Dee Da in 2001. STP seems like it's back for good and ready to rock for years to come.

    Stone Temple Pilots Says...
"It's just funny, being in the studio and hearing an assistant engineer say, 'Hey man, this is the first record I've worked on where [the artist] actually played their instruments in about a year.'"
