Super Mario fires his coach, Michael shows he's still got game and Oakland gets yanked from the World Series. Here's a look at the latest shakedowns and breakdowns from the world of sports.

1The Oakland Athletics were the hottest team in baseball after the All-Star break, but when the playoffs started, they choked - big time. The A's had a 2 - 0 lead on the New York Yankees in the first round of the playoffs but dropped three games in a row and lost the series 3 - 2. The Yankees will now play Seattle in the American League Championship Series and will be going for their fourth straight World Series title. Atlanta plays Arizona in the National League Championship Series.

1Michael Jordan still has game. He played a pre-season game for the Washington Wizards on October 10, 2001 and looked pretty good for someone who hasn't played pro ball in three years. But he still has a ways to go before he looks like the Michael we're used to seeing. On one play he had a chance to dunk the ball on an alley-oop pass but instead just did a lay up. Don't worry - by the time the season starts Michael will be dunking. MJ's first regular season game is October 30, 2001 against the New York Knicks.

1Ice may be the natural habitat of penguins but Mario Lemieux and his team are playing more like dodo birds. The Penguins lost the first four games of the season so their superstar captain, Mario Lemieux, decided to do something about it. He fired head coach, Ivan Hlinka, on October 14th. Super Mario is also the owner, so he can do that.

1The St. Louis Rams and the Green Bay Packers are looking like the early Super Bowl favorites. The Rams are still the only unbeaten team in the NFL after knocking off the New York Giants on October 14th and the Packers are now 4 - 1 after beating defending champions, the Baltimore Ravens. The only bad news for the Rams is that pro-bowl running back, Marshall Faulk, has a knee injury and will be out for a month.
