Star Search

When the first movie about the magical pants that fit each of the main characters even though they are all different sizes came out, Alexis Bledel was starring in Gilmore Girls, Amber Tamblyn was Joan of Arcadia, and Blake Lively and America Ferrara were relative newcomers. How things have changed. America is now the sweet star of Ugly Betty and Blake is one of TV’s hottest stars on Gossip Girl. But bffs know how to share, and these four stars do just that in this smart sequel.

Summer Plans

We find the girls as they’ve just finished their first year of college. Carmen (America Ferrara) is looking forward to a summer at home with her friends, but unfortunately the other girls have other plans. Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) is staying in New York to work at a video store while finishing up her first screenplay, Lena (Alexis Bledel) has signed up for summer art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design, and Bridget (Blake Lively) is jetting off to Turkey for an archaeological dig.

Girl Talk

Disappointed, Carmen follows another friend to a summer theater program in Vermont, where she manages to step out behind the scenes role and into the spotlight. She also meets a boy. Not surprisingly, the girls all deal with their own emotional issues that include teen pregnancy, estranged family members, and of course romance. Just as each girl seems to be having the hardest time, the pants arrive and prove the real magical power of friendship.

The Bottom Line

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is like a young version of Sex and the City. The cast is excellent, with arguably four of the best young actresses in Hollywood, and each sub-plot adds a different piece to the puzzle of being a girl and growing up. This movie is all about friendship, so go see it with all your friends who won’t judge you if you cry or laugh out loud.
