Avan Jogia Interview

Feb 08, 2009

By: Sindy

Sindy: Hi Avan, what are you working on right now?

Avan: I just finished Spectacular! It’s a Nickelodeon movie about a show choir. I play a brainiac foreign exchange student. He’s really passionate about show choir and he was such a fun character to play.

Sindy: Did you sing and dance in the movie?

Avan: Yeah, I did the dancing, but I lip-synched the songs because I don’t sing. The soundtrack is really cool, though, even though I’m not on it (laughs). It came out last week.

Sindy: Cool! Did you train long for the dance sequences?

Avan:: I had to do three weeks of rehearsals so yeah, lots of dancing.

Sindy: Do you have a dancing background?

Avan: Mm no, I mean, I could always dance, but I didn’t take choreography lessons or anything.

Sindy: Just a natural rhythm, right?

Avan: Right. (laughs)

Sindy: So tell me about the TV show, Caprica.

Avan: It’s a Battlestar Galactica spin-off series. I play a character who is pretty confused—he thinks he’s doing the right thing but he’s very much not. It’s a darker role; very intense—it’s going to be fun and it’s a bit of a switch to do this after Spectacular.

Sindy: Were you a fan of Battlestar Galactica?

Avan: You know I’d heard great things but I’d never watched it before. But when I got the role I started watching it obsessively and I became a huge fan. It challenges so many things and it’s a really awesome franchise.

Sindy: Do you feel a lot of pressure since there’s such a big fan base?

Avan: Well, I feel like Caprica is a different kind of show than Battlestar. There is a lot of pressure, but Caprica is a show that does something different, but just as well as Battlestar.

Sindy: What makes it different?

Avan: Instead of taking place on a ship and being so sci-fi, it’s more close to home. It all happens on Caprica and it’s more the personal stories of the families that live there so it’s less of a battle/war story and more of a life story..

Sindy: Wicked, I’ll have to watch it! I also hear you got to work with the guy from Law & Order: SVU.

Avan: Yeah, Christopher Meloni. We worked together on a movie called Gym Teacher. It’s coming out on DVD really soon, actually. Christopher Meloni was great, he taught me a lot. It was fantastic to watch him work—I like learning from example. He was really funny too. Law & Order: SVU is an intense show but he’s really got a gift for comedy that you wouldn’t guess.

Sindy: Who else would you really like to work with??

Avan: Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been watching movies, so I really appreciate great acting.

Sindy: What would you say is your favourite movie?

Avan: Benny & Joon, a romantic comedy with Johnny Depp, which is probably surprising since the genre I like is usually darker, but yeah—very cool movie.o problem, thanks Kidzworld!

Sindy: And who's your celebrity crush?

Avan: Natalie Portman. She is all kinds of hot and she’s ridiculously talented and ridiculously smart.

Sindy: Most definitely. Good pick. Thanks so much, Avan.

Avan: Thanks!
