Pirate Ploy

Apr 13, 2009

The US Navy has rescued the captain of an American ship who was held prisoner by pirates for five days.

Three of the pirates were shot and killed in an amazing rescue ordered by President Barack Obama. A fourth pirate surrendered.

Captain Richard Phillips looked healthy and well when he was picked up after the shooting. His boat had been carrying food when it was attacked by pirates from Somalia, Africa, on April 8.

There were other crew members on board but Captain Phillips gave himself up to the pirates so his men would be safe.

Piracy is a huge problem in the sea near Somalia, but it's nothing like the sort of thing you see in movies or on TV. pirates with guns and weapons travel on small boats to much larger ones, and then force their way on board. Once they have control of the ship they talk to its owners to try to get them to pay millions of dollars to release it.
