Fantastic Mr. Fox Movie Rating: 4

Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney) retired from thievery to settle down and start a family with Mrs. Fox (voiced by Meryl Streep), but his dull job at a local newspaper is doing nothing for his sense of adventure. In search of past glories, Mr. Fox hatches a plan to raid some nearby farmers with the help of his animal friends.

Arthouse Animation

Wes Anderson loosely based his script on Roald Dahl’s children’s story, but the quirky director makes the tale entirely his own. Like Anderson’s live action films like Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox tells the story of a dysfunctional family that ultimately discovers the love underneath all the neuroses.

Daddy Issues

While Mr. Fox is busy planning his heist and trying to reclaim his formerly fantastic self, his brooding son Ash (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) vies, unsuccessfully, for his attention. Unfortunately Mr. Fox is more impressed by the athletic talents of Ash’s cousin, Kristofferson, whose help he enlists to rob the mean farmers Mr. Boggis, Mr. Bean and Mr. Bunce. A jealous Ash joins the ambitious crew, but when the contempable farmers discover the culprits responsible for the crime and come searching for Mr. Fox, Ash must put his aside his feelings of inadequacy to help his family.

Stop-Motion Spectacular

Thanks to all the effort put into a detailed, elaborate set, his movie is a real feast for your eyes. The fine details of the miniature models are mesmerizing—you’ll be amazed to see the intricate movement of the fur and the revealing facial expressions conjured by skilled animators.

The Bottom Line

There are a few slow parts, but overall, Fantastic Mr. Fox is an original, engaging and highly imaginative movie with a sense of humor that kids and adults can both appreciate. Take your parents to this one!
