Oceans Movie Rating: 4

Last year, DisneyNature released Earth, an epic nature documentary meant to commemorate Earth Day. This year, Disney follows the stunning (and successful) documentary with another adventure in nature conservation. Oceans plunges audiences into the depths to reveal the hidden spectacles of undersea life.

Turtles And Penguins And Whales, Oh My!

In Oceans, ginormous blue whales glide effortlessly through the depths, tiny spider crabs scuttle across the sandy floor and helpless sea turtles race from their beachy birthplace to the safety of the ocean deep. If March of the Penguins made you tired of the waddling birds hogging all the spotlight, you’ll be happy to see footage dedicated to otters, sea lions and other cute and cuddly aquatic beasts.

Humans And The Ocean

Few of us ever get to dip a toe in an ocean. That’s why it’s so easy to forget about the amazing animal life that lives beneath the waves. Human pollution has endangered many of the oceans’ plants and animals and Oceans reminds us that we need to do our part to keep them safe. A shot of a seal swimming past a shopping cart on the ocean floor reminds us of the damage we’ve caused. During the opening week of Oceans, Disney will donate a small contribution to The Nature Conservancy in honor of each guest that views the film. The money will go toward saving coral reefs, a life source and haven for many sea animals.

The Bottom Line

It took the filmmakers seven months to capture the breathtaking footage of the camera-shy blue whale and more than seven years to put Oceans together. The patience and skill of the filmmakers really shows—Oceans unveils a whole new world of fantastic creatures we’d never otherwise have a chance to see. Oceans also serves as a haunting reminder of the environmental impact we have on this amazing hidden world.
