The 2010 Winter Olympic Games are coming to Vancouver, Canada in February! Check out what nations are going to be competing in the Games (over 80!) and what sports will be included (86)!

Participating Nations

There will be over 80 countries represented at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Nations participating in the Winter Olympics for the very first time include: Ghana, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Peru, Montenegro and Serbia. And, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Jamaica will return to the Winter Games after missing the 2006 Winter Olympics!

Sports

86 winter sports events have been announced as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The eight sports called “ice sports” are:

  • Bobsled
  • Luge
  • Skeleton
  • Ice Hockey
  • Figure Skating
  • Short Track Speed Skating
  • Curling

The three sports called “alpine skiing and snowboarding” events are:

  • Alpine Skiing
  • Freestyle Skiing (includes Aerials, Moguls and Ski Cross)
  • Snowboarding (includes Half-Pipe, Parallel Giant Slalom and Snowboard Cross)

The four sports called “Nordic” events are:

  • Biathlon
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Ski Jumping
  • Nordic Combined

Sports that wanted to be included in the 2010 Winter Games but were denied were:

  • Biathlong Mixed Relay
  • Mixed Doubles Curling
  • Team Alpine Skiing
  • Team Bobsled and Skeleton
  • Women’s Ski Jumping
