How to Train Your Dragon Blu-Ray + DVD Dragon Double Pack Review

Oct 13, 2010

Have you ever ridden a fire-breathing dragon? Neither had Hiccup, but all that changed when he met Toothless. Find out more in the Kidzworld Blu-Ray + DVD Dragon Double Pack review of How To Train Your Dragon!

Befriending The Enemy

Hiccup is a scrawny Viking who needs to prove himself to his father and the rest of the clan. He can’t seem to make the grade at dragon-fighting school—forget about beating the Deadly Nadder or Gronckles he’s supposed to fight in the training ring. But when Hiccup finally succeeds at shooting down a dragon—one of the Vikings’ sworn enemies—he can’t bring himself to kill it. Instead, Hiccup creates an artificial wing for the battle-damaged dragon (who he names Toothless) and the two slowly become friends.

Based On The Book Series

How To Train Your Dragon is based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, but a lot changed from the page to the screen. In the books, Toothless is much smaller—too small for Hiccup to ride. But what fun is a movie about dragons if there’s no flying scenes? Other changes include adding Astrid, Hiccup’s love interest, and changing Hiccup’s age—he’s a teenager in the movie, but only 10-years-old in the book. Despite the changes, the movie stays true to the heart of the series and fans of the book won’t be disappointed.

The Bottom Line

Awesome aerial battles, a huge monster of a lead dragon and lots of witty dialogue guarantee you’ll be on the edge of your seat for this high-flying movie. There’s also a great message about empathy—it’s important to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes once in a while! And after watching Hiccup slowly train and get closer with Toothless, you’ll definitely wish you had a pet dragon of your own.
