Owl City Bio

Jul 10, 2018

Owl City went from Myspace to the airwaves with hits like "Fireflies" and "Vanilla Twilight." Find out more about the man behind the name in Kidzworld’s bio.

Night Owl

Owl City is the official name for singer Adam Young’s music. Adam hails from Minnesota, where he unloaded soda trucks before hitting it big on the radio. Unable to sleep after his late work shifts, Adam began creating music in his parents’ basement. He combined unique sounds and instruments to create a soothing synth pop sound. Just for fun, Adam uploaded his tunes onto Myspace under the name Owl City. He soon developed a close relationship with his many fans, responding to personal messages and using their suggestions in future songs. In 2007, Adam began selling his music through iTunes and also released his first EP, Of June.

Strike a Deal

In 2008, record label Universal Republic approached Adam and offered to sign him to their label. Of course, Adam agreed and Owl City started producing its full length album. When Ocean Eyes was released it became an immediate hit all across the country. Tracks like Vanilla Twilight and Fireflies got serious radio play, and Owl City became an instant celebrity. 2011 saw the release of Owl City’s latest album, All Things Bright and Beautiful. The album included hits ‘The Yacht Club’ (featuring Lights), ‘Alligator Sky’ and ‘Deer in the Headlights’.

Adam has also been involved in a wide variety of side projects. He has worked with Relient K frontman Matt Thiessen on the Relient K hit ‘Terminals’, had his tune ‘The Technicolor Phase’ appear in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, recorded a Christian worship song called ‘In Christ Alone’ and made a Christmas single!
