American Idol: Season 11, Week 19 :: Finale

May 23, 2012

This week on American Idol (Season 11, Week 19), Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips compete for the American Idol title. Read Kidzworld’s recap of the “Finale,” which aired on May 22, 2012, to discover what you missed.

The Final Two

There are only two contestants left - Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips - and their voices couldn’t be more like night and day. Jessica has a powerful Beyonce-ish voice that could lead to a pop or R&B album, while Phillip has a unique rocker’s edge. Both deserve to win. But ultimately it’ll come down to which type of music America prefers.

Songs

The contestants each sang three songs this week. The first was American Idol creator Simon Fuller’s choice, the second was a song they each already sang this season, and the third was the song that will be their first single should they win the competition.

An Unfair Advantage

Both contestants were on par for the first two rounds. No real wows and no flops. But during their third performances, the judges shot down Jessica’s song, which was written for her. Unfortunately, this put Jessica at a disadvantage because the judges praised Phillip’s song, even going so far as to give him a standing ovation. Concluding the show with positive feedback for only one of the contestants puts them on an uneven playing field. Phillip appears to be the logical winner, in spite of Jessica’s raw talent and drive. But maybe she’ll surprise us all.

And The Winner Is...

Phillip Phillips! No real surprise there. He was adored by girls for his looks and by guys for his originality. Even though Jessica had the power voice, Phillip took the title.
