Disneys Sherlock Holmes-inspired mice and mystery classic The Great Mouse Detective (Mystery in the Mist Edition) has just been released for the first time on Blu-Ray as part of 2 Disc DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack. Find out more in the Kidzworld Review!

The Great Mouse Detective

We're all familiar with super sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick Watson, the subject of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic turn of the century Detective stories which have since been adapted into countless movies and shows. Disney's animated classic The Great Mouse Detective revolves around two smaller inhabitants of Baker Street - Mouse Detective Basil and his sidekick Dawson!

Following in the much bigger footsteps of Sherlock, Basil is a charming  investigator extraordinaire who is set with the task of discovering the whereabouts of a kidnapped master toymaker in London only to come up against the fiendish Professor Ratigan, a rat determined to become a king among rodents!

Bonus Features

This is the first time The Great Mouse Detective has been released on Blu-Ray, but that's not the only draw on this re-release. If you're fan of the film, there are some fun bonus features that might pique your interest, such as:

  • So You Think You Can Sleuth: For those of you who like to solve mysteries yourself, this is an introduction into private investigating!
  • The "World's Greatest Criminal Mind" Sing-A-Long Song: Sing Along with some villainous vocals provided by the Vincent Price (one of the most famous voices in acting of the 20th century.)
  • The Making of The Great Mouse Detective: A behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made.

The Bottom Line

The Great Mouse Detective Mystery in the Mist Edition is one of Disney's lesser-known classic animated films, and even though it's a fun movie for the whole family with no shortage of adventure, action and likable charaters, it doesn't have the same memorability as some of Disney's other timeless animated films like Beauty and the Beast or Robin Hood. The movie looks fantastic in HD Digital, and is definitely worth watching and owning if you're a sucker for sleuthing and moon-eyed for mice, but if you're looking for mouse adventure movie we would also recommend checking out An American Tale (it may not be a Disney film, but it has a musical score you wont be able to get out of your head for years!)
