Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

In the latest addition to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, based on the popular books by Jeff Kinney, our hero Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) is back with a few familiar faces – such as his best friend Rowley, his brother Rodrick, and his mom and his dad (Steve Zahn). After a few too many mishaps Greg’s father threatens to send him away to military school if he doesn’t shape up, but in Greg’s attempts to stay out of trouble he somehow ends up in the thick of it every time, whether it’s taking a job at a swanky a country club or letting the father-son camping trip with the Wilderness Explorers go sideways. As if that’s not enough trouble for one kid’s plate, there’s also the Heffley’s new dog Sweetie, who manages to “fetch” even more trouble for Greg!

Bonus Features

  • Class Clown Animated Short
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

The Bottom Line

For serious fans of the books, you’ll notice that this third installment is actually a combination of books three and four. The last movie Rodrick Rules was all about Greg’s relationship with his brother, Dog Days is about how he deals with his dad. The success of all these movies to date has a lot to do with the lovable cast, so if you’ve loved the previous movies, there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy this one as well. The ideas and characters aren’t as fresh as when the films first hit the screen, but they’re goofiness and Greg’s wacky problems are still endearing. Hopefully if another movie is made, audiences will get to see Greg grow up just a little bit and deal with some new kinds of problems.

The Blu-Ray/DVD and Digital copy has similar extras to the last two films, and while they won’t blow you out of the water, the most important thing about these films is the characters.
